Free Writes 1-20Free Write 1:What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you? Tell it as a story and use as many details as you can remember.
Free Write 2: Write a story about Lehi Junior from the point of view of the walls. It can be a true story or you can make it up. Free Write 3: Write a scene that takes place immediately after a tragedy. Don’t mention the tragedy. Free Write 4: Write about the worst fight you've ever had with your best friend. Describe your emotions as well as what happened. Free Write 5: Just a few months ago, a new species of spider was found. The discoverers thought it looked like the sorting hat from Harry Potter so they named it after the series: Eriovixia gryffindori. They named it after Godric Gryffindor who originally owned the hat in the novel. ~Pretend, you found a new animal/insect/etc. species. It resembles something from a popular movie/book franchise. What does it look like and what name do you give it because of it. Be descriptive. If you need more words to get to your 200 word count, tell the story of how you discovered it. Free Write 6: Write a story where every sentence begins with the next letter in the alphabet starting with the letter “A.” Once you finish the alphabet, repeat “Z” and move backward. Then repeat and so on until you finish your free write. Ex: Anytime the doctor calls is a bad time but I was looking forward to the call today. Betting on how close it was to my actual appointment, I was guessing the results were bad. Cranking the steering wheel to the side, I pulled over to answer the call….. Free Write 7: Grab a book out of your backpack (can be a textbook or a novel). Turn to page 51. Find the first sentence of the last paragraph on that page. Use that sentence as the first sentence of your free write. Free Write 8: •Get a “dumb law” paper from Mrs. Cox. Write a story about what happened to make it necessary for that law to be created. •Example: In Vermont, it is a law that All residents have to take a bath on Saturday night. •I might then write a story about how when people went to church on Sunday, it was so stinky that people passed out, and one day, a visitor from out of town found an entire chapel passed out from the stench of each other. Free Write 9: Write about what you think would be the most embarrassing thing to happen to you. Be sure to include details. (Make it humorous….planning for your humorous realistic fiction story.) Free Write 10: The ¨How To¨ article is a staple of popular magazines. We are humorists. We don need ¨How To¨ articles. What we need are ¨How NOT To¨ articles. Brainstorm a list of five ideas. Then pick one that tickles your fancy and then write a ¨How NOT to¨ article. Include the steps and a description of the steps.Examples:
Free Write 11: Write a story about doing the most unromantic thing you can think of.Possible ideas:Going to the dentist, meeting an alien duck, dog sitting, changing the oil on a truck, plowing a wheat field, etc. Free Write 12: •Pretend that you are in your 70s or 80s. •Complain about kids these days. Free Write 13: As you listen to the music, write a story to go with it--as if the music were the soundtrack to the story. Free Write 15: Write a story that includes these items: a suitcase, a parrot, and a deck of cards.
Free Write 16: Write a story that includes as many candy brand names as possible. Do not simply list them. Work them into the story. For example: There once was a jolly rancher, who spent his days pushing cow tails... Free Write 17: •These doors are to another era in time. Pick one door and tell about what time period it takes you to. Write about an adventure you have in that era. Free Write 18: Someone has been stealing away the puppies from your town at night. You and a crack team of investigators (concerned people from the neighborhood and your friends) have decided to figure out the crime when the police couldn't. What do you do and how do you solve it?
Free Write 19: •Someone in your family's household has been stealing the cookies from the cookie jar at night. You set up an elaborate surveillance system in order to nab the culprit. Talk about you plan from beginning to end. Do you catch the thief? Free Write 20: •You are out camping in the forest and you wake to find your lucky hat missing. You and your friends must track down the perpetrator, whether man or animal. Use the clues of the forest (tracking, etc.) to find this wonderful head covering. |
Free Writes 21-Free Write 21: On a day that started like any other, your friends and family have started to treat you a bit strangely and you suspect that something is up. On a whim, you stay out a bit later then curfew. When you return your house is surrounded by police cars. What do you do?
Free Write 22: Write about a pair of detectives that don't work well together. Why don't they get along? Be as detailed as possible. Free Write 23: You return home one day to find that a cuckoo clock has mysteriously appeared on your wall. There is no indication that someone broke in, and no sign that anything was taken. Still, there it is – a big red cuckoo clock, hanging on your wall. Not sure what to do, you take a seat. In 10 minutes, the clock will reach the hour mark. What pops out when it does? What happens next? Free Write 24: Over the course of one week, five high-profile CEOs go missing. (CEOs are the owners of companies…some examples would be Bill Gates, Donald Trump, Mark Zuckerberg, etc.) Were they abducted? Did they all run off to escape their high-pressure lives? How will your detective find them? Free Write 25: General March hires Detective Thomas to try to find the person who’s been blackmailing March for the past twenty years. Thomas tracks the miscreant down, but finds that the man behind the threats has been dead for the past ten years. So who’s carrying on the blackmailing? And is the secret that’s held March prisoner this long something that should stay a secret? Free Write 26: It’s 1864, and the United States is in the middle of a Civil War. Write a scene in which an undercover Union soldier passes through a quaint southern town brimming with Confederate rebels. Free Write 27: Write a story about a female archaeologist from 19th century England who meets a gentleman on an expedition who claims that he was once an Egyptian pharaoh. Free Write 28: Write a story about an orphaned child in the 1970s that meets a strange family who resides in an even stranger house on the California coast. Free Write 29: Write one chapter about a female housekeeper who explores her master’s study in 19th century France. What all does she discover and is it something that she rather not have wished to find? Free Write 30: Do a quick free write in the point of view of a homeless civilian who discovers a suspicious alleyway during 1929 of The Great Depression that leads to a grand (or horrific) revelation. Free Write 31: Write a character profile of a wealthy 19th century English banker, who was once a lion tamer in a past life. Free Write 32: Write a story to go with this dialogue: “Why is there a dragon in the fridge?” “Because it was hot!” Free Write 33: Write a story to go with the picture. Free Write 34: Write a story to go along with the music.

Free Write 37: At birth, everyone is born with the day they are going to die tattooed on their forearm. Your character was supposed to die yesterday. Free Write 38: Roll a die three times. Then create a story using the setting, character, and conflict below. Free Write 39: Get a line from a song from Mrs. Cox. Write a story to go with that line. "This is where I say I've had enough."
