A DayDue Today:-- Silent Reading: For silent reading, students read their assigned story for their final project. Analyzing Character & Setting: As a class, we analyzed the character and setting from the story The Dinner Party so students could see an example summary and analysis write up. Final Project: Students worked on the character and setting portion of their final projects. Homework: Reading B DayDue Today:--
Point of View: 1st Person: the narrator is a character in the story. Uses words like we, I, me, us, etc. 2nd Person: When the writer incorporates the reader into the story using "you"--this is rarely seen in literature other than Choose Your Own Adventure Stories. It is most often seen in instructions and recipes. 3rd Person: When the narrator is not a character in the story. Uses words like they, he, she, etc. Narrator: Who is telling the story. The point of view can change the whole story. In the movie Sleeping Beauty the point of view is that of Aurora and her family. In this story, Maleficent is an evil witch. However, you watch the movie Maleficent which is told from the witch's point of view, you find she is misunderstood and mistreated, and not so evil after all. The Hitch Hiker: We watched the Twilight Zone version which is from a girl's point of view. We then read the play, which is told from a man's point of view. Journal 13: 1-How did changing the point of view from a man to a woman change the story? (write a 50 word response for this question). 2-Now pick one of the other stories we have read (The Lady or the Tiger, The Tell-Tale Heart, or The Dinner Party) and re-write it from a different character’s point of view. Example: Write The Dinner Party from the hostess’s point of view (This should be 150 words long, bringing your total word count for this journal to 200 words) Due Today: SATDO Charts
The Lady or the Tiger: We read the short story and focused on the setting. Ending/Setting: We talked about how setting can change characters, outcomes, etc. We looked at other movies that had arenas similar to what was seen in the short story. Students then wrote an ending for the story in a new setting. With the new setting, if students, if it required a different animal than a tiger than they needed to make that adjustment. This was done on google classroom. For example, if it were to take place in a fairy tale, maybe instead of a tiger behind the door, it would be an ogre or a dragon. Homework: Reading, finish the ending/setting for The Lady or the Tiger. Due Today:--
Silent Reading The Tell-Tale Heart: We read the story and watched a video version of it and focused on the character of the narrator. SATDO Chart: We filled out the SATDO chart for The Tell-Tale Heart. Homework: Reading, finish Tell-Tale Heart SATDO chart Due Today: Picture Book Analysis
Lab Time: We went to the lab to finish up the picture book analysis from the last class period. Characterization: We discussed how a character can effect the theme of a story. We discussed SATDO in how to analyze a character and his/her contribution to the theme. The notes are below. The Dinner Party: We read the story The Dinner Party as a class and went through and found the SATDO for Mrs. Wynnes. Homework: Reading S –What the character says What does the character say? How does the character say it? A –The character’s appearance (and environment) What is the appearance of the character? (although appearances can be deceptive) What does the text say about the character’s facial expression and other body language? What is the character’s clothing like? T –The character’s thoughts What are the character’s thoughts? What are the character’s feelings and emotions? What are conflicts within the character? D –What the character does (inward and outward behavior) What are the character’s actions? How does the character interact with other characters? How does a character act when under stress (or when in love, when confused, etc.)? O –What others say about the character What do other characters say about the character? What emotions does this character elicit in other characters? Due Today: --
Silent Reading/Library: We either silently read or went to the library to check out books. Picture Book Analysis: Students analyzed a picture book like we did last time with The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore. They did this on a document on Google Classroom. Class codes are below. A1: vculh1 A2: 45h0488 A4: 5x3e1r3 B6: s3qlze B7: 15jpxr B8: 6brelm3 Homework: Reading Due Today: AoW-Movie Review Deconstructing Goldilocks: We watched the film below from Conan O'Brien where two comedians deconstruct Goldilocks. Deconstructing Jack & Jill: After watching the video, as a class, we deconstructed the nursery rhyme Jack & Jill. Analyzing: Deconstructing/analyzing is looking below the surface for what the author was trying to do when they wrote the story that way. As a class, we analyzed the illustrations and text of the picture book The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore. Homework: Reading Due Today:-- Unit Pretest: We did a pretest on the elements of fiction just to see what students already knew to help guide Mrs. Cox's instruction of the unit. Elements of Fiction: We quickly reviewed plot, point of view, theme, characterization, and setting in stories. Analysis: We went through and learned how to analyze using the PowerPoint below. AoW-Movie Review: We went through and looked for summary and analysis in a movie review of The Lego Batman Movie as a class. For homework, students will do the same thing for a movie review of Beauty and the Beast. Homework: Finish annotating the Beauty and the Beast article.
Due Today: Buttercream argument organizer
Prisoner B-3087: We read four more chapters in the book. However, because there was less time, we read 2 chapters and I summarized the other two. We DIDN'T fill out an argument organizer for these chapters. You're welcome. Presentations: The rest of the time we continued working on our presentations. They are due: A-day - March 23rd; B-day - March 24th. Please remember these important dates! If you're going to be absent on the day you are presenting, make sure to let me know in advance so we can set up a different day for you to present. Homework: Reading, Webquest, work on presentation |
